The Ria Formosa Sunset Boat Trip: What It Is and When It Sails

Formosamar's one-hour sunset trip leaves Faro marina at a time set by the sun, which goes down about 20:55 in late June and about 17:20 in December.

Updated October 2026

A sunset trip is an hour on the lagoon as the light goes, with no island stop. Formosamar runs one from Faro marina on a pontoon boat, with a local guide and live commentary. It’s timed to the sunset, and at Faro the sun goes down around 20:55 in late June and around 17:20 in late December, so the departure moves by more than three and a half hours over the year.

Sunset at Faro moves from about 17:18 in late December to about 20:55 in late June, and the sunset trips move with it.

If you want the lagoon in the evening light without giving a whole day to it, this is the trip. It’s from $36 on the booking platform when we checked and rated 4.7 from 456 reviews. Check the departure time for your date when you book.

The hour that vanishes in late October is the clock change. Summer time ends on 25 October 2026, so sunset comes an hour earlier overnight, and it starts again on 28 March 2027. Formosamar’s listing gives no fixed hour and reserves the right to change times for the weather and the tides, so go by the time on your booking.

What you see from the boat

The trip stays inside the lagoon: channels, saltmarsh and, when the tide is out, mudflats and sandbanks. Reviewers mention the birds and seeing Faro “from a different perspective”. You may also see planes landing at Faro airport, which sits beside the western lagoon. One guest in April advised taking something warm to wear.

Nobody controls the sky. A guest in August who otherwise loved the trip wrote that it was a shame the sunset wasn’t the best on their evening. Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead gives you some room if the forecast looks poor.

It doesn’t land, and it isn’t a dolphin trip. Dolphin trips from Faro head out to sea; this boat stays in the lagoon.

Who it suits

Couples, for a start, since the listing sells it as a romantic hour. It also suits anyone who has spent the day on a beach and wants the lagoon without another long outing: a seat, a guide talking, the light going. If you want to set foot on an island, it’s the wrong boat.

From Faro, it’s the one boat on this site built around the sunset.

Other ways to end the day on the water

Odyssey Traditional Boat Tours’ full day from Olhão has a 15:45 run that, in the listing’s words, “lasts until sunset”: about four hours, with three island stops of 45 minutes to an hour. That only lines up with the sunset around September. At other times of year the sun sets well before or well after the boat gets back. On Odyssey’s three-hour tour, one guest noted that “they drive back slowly for sunset”.

Lands - Turismo na Natureza runs a quiet, solar-powered boat for an hour from the Porta Nova pier, from $28 and rated 4.6 from 266 reviews. One couple took the 4:30pm boat in April. Its listing doesn’t mention the sunset.
