Is Ria Formosa Worth Visiting? The Answer from the Water
Yes, for car-free sand islands, a fishing village and the southernmost tip of mainland Portugal. Which boat suits whom, why mornings win, and who should ferry.
Yes, if you want sand islands without cars, a fishing village where lunch comes off the boats, and the southernmost tip of mainland Portugal. The Ria Formosa is a natural park and a Ramsar wetland, and in 2010 it was elected one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. Go by boat, and go in the morning.

The boat to start with is the Faro islands tour run by Islands 4 you: a small boat for 11 people at most, landing for 45 minutes each on Ilha Deserta and at Farol. It’s from $48 on the booking platform when we checked and rated 4.7 from 2,980 reviews, more reviews than any other boat on this site. Lunch isn’t included.
What you get for the trip
Several reviewers single out Culatra, and one hop-on hop-off passenger called it “where you’d want to spend most of the day”. It’s a sand island of six or seven kilometres with no roads and about a thousand residents, most of them in a fishing village of sandy lanes, a church and seafood restaurants. Next door, nobody lives on Deserta, where a 2 km boardwalk crosses the dunes and the beach runs out to Cabo de Santa Maria.
The tide runs the lagoon. At low water, sandbanks and shellfish beds rise out of the channels, stakes and nets mark the clam and oyster farms, and most of those oysters are exported, mainly to France. Herons and egrets work the marsh edges, and on a lucky day there are spoonbills.
What it isn’t
It’s quiet nature, not big wildlife. Dolphin trips from Faro and Olhão cross the lagoon and head out to sea, while the island boats stay inside. Flamingos turn up on some days, mostly from autumn to early spring, but no boat here promises them. The lagoon’s seahorses have crashed in number and are protected in sanctuaries, so no tour shows them.
It isn’t Benagil either. That sea cave is on the cliff coast about 60 km west, a different day out altogether. The lighthouse at Farol can’t be climbed for now, because visits are suspended while it is renovated (as of October 2026).
Nor is it always the same boat. Islands 4 you may use a speedboat when a catamaran or pontoon is out of service, or when the numbers or the wind call for it.
Mornings give you more island
Morning departures give the longest island stops. Afternoon runs are shorter, and some island restaurants close in the afternoon and out of season. Estrela da Ria Formosa’s catamaran runs about five hours in the morning and four in the afternoon. One afternoon passenger in September got about 40 minutes on Culatra instead of the one to two hours they expected, and another found most restaurants closed. Odyssey Traditional Boat Tours’ afternoon stop at Culatra is 45 minutes to an hour instead of two. From Easter to mid-October, Islands 4 you’s morning tour runs about four hours with time for lunch at Farol, against three and a half in the afternoon and three hours the rest of the year.

Of the rest, Formosamar’s Deserta and Farol catamaran, from $48 and rated 4.7 from 1,071 reviews, gives an hour at Farol and 20 to 30 minutes on Deserta. Odyssey’s three-hour Armona and Culatra tour is from $39 and rated 4.7 from 664 reviews, the cheapest guided trip here that lands on islands. Two one-hour cruises stay on the water: the quiet, solar-powered boat run by Lands - Turismo na Natureza, from $28 and rated 4.6 from 266 reviews, and Formosamar’s sunset trip, from $36 and rated 4.7 from 456 reviews. Every boat on this site can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead for a full refund.
If birds are your reason for going, the solar boat is the quietest way through the marsh, and riaformosabirdwatchingtour.com goes species by species through the lagoon’s birds and the dedicated birding boats.
Who might skip the tour
Anyone who wants one beach for the whole day. The public ferry from Olhão to Armona, Culatra or Farol costs about €2 each way (2026) and runs all year, and the return ferry from Faro to Deserta is from $11. Ferry or boat tour has the fares and the seasons.
Wheelchair users, and anyone who finds sand and long boardwalks hard going. Three listings rule out people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users, and the islands are sand and boardwalk. Odyssey asks guests with reduced mobility to tell it in advance. Praia de Faro, on a peninsula you can drive to, avoids the boat altogether.
For what each island is like, read the Ria Formosa islands guide. Faro or Olhão and Ilha Deserta by boat cover the departures and the empty island, and every boat is compared on the homepage.
