Faro to Deserta and Farol · 3 to 4 hours · 11 guests at most
The Ria Formosa is a lagoon of channels, salt marsh and sand islands on Faro's doorstep. Islands 4 you's small boats carry 11 guests at most to Ilha Deserta and the lighthouse village of Farol, with about 45 minutes ashore on each: three hours, or about four on mornings from Easter to mid-October.
The Experience
From Islands 4 you's listing: the two island stops, what comes with the boat, and what you pay for separately, such as lunch on Farol.
Good to know: Depending on the number of customers, the wind conditions and also if one of the catamarans/pontoons (first picture) is not available due to maintenance or breakdown, we can use the speedboad (second picture) instead in order to provide the same service. · The roof of the boat might not be accessible during bad weather conditions. · The best season to see birds is from October until March. Spring and autumn bring migrating birds; summer is the breeding season. There’s also difference what we can see, depending on the level tide. · During high season (Easter until mid October), the morning tour will be about 4 hours to allow a slightly longer stop on the island of Farol to enjoy lunch in one of the typical restaurants of the community or visit the island more time. Lunch is optional and not included in the price. The choice of restaurant and its service is not linked to the boat tour company. The afternoon tour is around 3,5 hours. · The rest of the year, the duration is 3 hours. · Not suitable for: People with mobility impairments, Wheelchair users · Not Included: Pick-up service, Lunch
Four steps from the right pier to the boat back, including the departure time that decides how long you get ashore.
Faro's island boats leave from two spots five to seven minutes' walk apart: the Porta Nova pier by the old-town gate, and the marina. Islands 4 you meets on the marina side, about 100 metres in front of the Eva Senses Hotel; look for staff in a red T-shirt or jacket. The Porta Nova pier is a different meeting point, so don't wait there.
From Easter to mid-October the morning tour runs about four hours, with a longer stop on Farol for lunch at a village restaurant, and the afternoon tour about three and a half. The rest of the year both last three hours. Lunch is never included. If time on the islands matters most to you, book the morning.
The boat follows the channels through the natural park while the guide talks about the islands and the park; the listing offers English, Portuguese, French and Spanish. The first stop is Ilha Deserta, officially Ilha da Barreta, where nobody lives. You get about 45 minutes, enough for a swim or a brisk walk on its boardwalk, not both.
The second stop is Farol, the village at the western end of Ilha da Culatra, for about 45 minutes. Its lighthouse, first lit in 1851, still works but is closed to visits while it is renovated (as of October 2026). Swim in spring and summer, or find one of the cafés that open in season, before the boat takes you back through the channels to Faro.

An Independent Guide to the Lagoon
What the Ria Formosa is, which boat lands where and for how long, Faro against Olhão, the public ferries, the time of day and the kind of boat.
The Ria Formosa is the lagoon on Faro’s doorstep. It is a natural park of about 18,000 hectares, a maze of channels and salt marsh sheltered from the Atlantic by a chain of sand islands along some 55–60 km of the Algarve coast. It has been a Ramsar wetland since 1980, and in 2010 it was elected one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. Around Faro and Olhão, only Praia de Faro, which has a road bridge, can be reached without a boat.
The boat this site recommends is Islands 4 you’s Faro islands tour: a small boat with 11 guests at most that lands on Ilha Deserta and at Farol for about 45 minutes each, rated 4.7 from 2,980 reviews and from about $48 on the booking platform when we checked. It lasts three hours, or about four on morning departures from Easter to mid-October, which stop longer at Farol so you can eat at one of the village restaurants. Lunch is not included.

Scientists count five barrier islands in the Ria Formosa. From west to east they are Barreta, Culatra, Armona, Tavira and Cabanas, with tidal inlets between them and a peninsula at each end. The boats from Faro and Olhão work the western half, and none of them lands on more than two islands in one trip.
Ilha da Barreta is better known as Ilha Deserta. Nobody lives there. It has one restaurant, some 10 km of beach and a boardwalk loop of about 2 km to Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal.
Ilha da Culatra, across the Faro–Olhão inlet, is six or seven kilometres of sand with no roads and about a thousand people, most of them in Culatra village. It holds three villages. Farol, at the western end, is named after its lighthouse. Hangares, in the middle, is quiet, and tours pause there for photos. Culatra, in the east, is a working fishing village rather than a resort, with sandy lanes, a church, a school, seafood restaurants and oyster and clam beds out on the flats. The island belongs to Faro, though its year-round ferry leaves from Olhão.
So when a listing promises “3 islands” or “4 stops, 3 islands”, read three island stops on two islands. From Faro that means Deserta plus two or three villages on Culatra; from Olhão, Culatra plus Armona. Armona, the next island east, is the easy one from Olhão, 15 to 20 minutes on the public ferry, with a village of holiday houses by the pier and a boardwalk over the dunes to a beach that empties out the further east you walk. The Ria Formosa islands guide takes them one by one, and the Ilha Deserta boat trip covers the empty island and the walk to the cape.
The lighthouse causes its own confusion. The Farol do Cabo de Santa Maria stands at Farol, on Culatra, while the cape it is named after is on Barreta: the Faro–Olhão inlet, opened for the two ports early in the 20th century, split what had been one island in two. The light was first lit in 1851, is about 46 metres tall and still works. It is closed to visits while it is renovated (as of October 2026). When it reopens, the lighthouse authority usually lets visitors up on Wednesday afternoons, so check before you plan a day around it.
Nine trips on this site cover the lagoon. Seven leave from Faro and two from Olhão. Seven land on islands, and two are one-hour cruises that never touch the sand. The stops below are the ones each operator lists, and they describe a morning departure.
| Trip and operator | Leaves from | Time ashore, as listed | Length | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Faro islands tour, Islands 4 you | Faro marina | Deserta 45 min, Farol 45 min | 3 h; about 4 h on high-season mornings | $48 |
| Deserta and Farol catamaran, Formosamar | Faro marina | Farol 1 h, Deserta 20–30 min | 3 h | $48 |
| 4-stop catamaran, Estrela da Ria Formosa | Faro, Porta Nova pier | Deserta 45 min, Farol 45 min, Hangares 15 min, Culatra 2 h | 5 h morning, 4 h afternoon | $51 |

| Return ferry to Deserta, Animaris | Faro, Porta Nova pier | Deserta, as long as you like | 45 min each way | $11 |

Two rows catch people out. Formosamar’s 20 to 30 minutes on Deserta is enough for a swim or a photo, not for the walk to the cape. And the $11 trip is a ferry ticket rather than a tour: a return seat on Animaris’s scheduled catamaran, 45 minutes each way with no guide listed, where you name your boat back when you leave Faro.
Odyssey’s summer stop is a quiet beach reached only by boat. When it is windy, cold or winter, the boat goes to Armona instead.
Faro’s boats leave from two places 350 to 460 metres apart, going by the meeting points on the listings, and waiting at the wrong one is the easiest way to miss a boat. The Porta Nova pier, by the gate in the old-town wall, is where Estrela da Ria Formosa, Animaris and Lands board, along with the public boats. The marina is the other cluster. Formosamar’s store is on the ground floor of the Ginásio Clube Naval building, and Islands 4 you meets about 100 metres in front of the Eva Senses Hotel, with staff in red.
Olhão is the next town east, and the year-round ferries to Armona and Culatra leave from there. Odyssey Traditional Boat Tours has its stand at Cais T on Avenida 5 de Outubro, near the ticket office for the public ferries, and its listings offer two starting points, so check the one on your booking. Both of its trips land on Culatra, and the full day stays two hours there at lunchtime. Ria Formosa boat tours from Faro or Olhão weighs the two towns as a base.
Nothing on this site leaves from Tavira, further east. Tavira’s own island is Ilha de Tavira, reached by ferry from the Quatro Águas pier, by a seasonal boat from Santa Luzia, or on foot at Barril beach.
Book by where you're staying and how much of the day you want to give it:
Deserta and Farol, about 45 minutes on each, with 11 guests at most. Meets on the marina side, by the Eva Senses Hotel.
Check dates →Farol, two hours on Culatra for lunch, then Armona or a quiet beach. Morning departures get the long Culatra stop.

See the catamaran →Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The islands are on public ferry routes, which is worth knowing before you book anything. From Olhão, ferries run all year to Armona, Culatra and Farol. In 2026 a single costs €2.10 to Armona or Culatra and €2.40 to Farol, paid at the kiosk at the terminal, so take cash. There are more boats in summer than in winter, and the times are on the board at the kiosk. From Faro, the public boat to Farol and Culatra is mainly a summer service, while Animaris sails to Deserta every day of the year: that is the $11 return ticket in the table.
A tour adds a guide who explains what you are passing, and two or three island stops in one morning without fitting timetables together. The ferry suits a beach day on one island. A tour suits a first look at several. Animaris’s hop-on hop-off pass sits between the two, with boats between Faro, Deserta, Farol and Culatra for 24 hours at your own pace and no guided tour of the lagoon in between. Ferry or boat tour? goes through the choice in more detail.
The hour you book shapes the trip more than the boat does, because morning departures get the longest island stops. Estrela da Ria Formosa’s morning tour lasts five hours and its afternoon tour four. One September afternoon guest got about 40 minutes on Culatra instead of the one to two hours they expected, and another found most of the restaurants already shut. Odyssey cuts its afternoon Culatra stop to between 45 minutes and an hour, and Islands 4 you runs its longer morning tour only from Easter to mid-October.
The sunset trip is a different kind of outing. Formosamar’s sunset boat trip is an hour on a pontoon boat from the marina, with a guide and no landing, from about $36 when we checked. Its departure follows the sun, which sets at Faro around 20:55 in late June and around 17:18 in late December, so look at the time for your date before you plan dinner around it. One April guest’s advice was to take something warm. Odyssey’s 15:45 full-day departure also runs until sunset, but that only works out around September. There is more on the evening options in the Ria Formosa sunset boat trip guide.
Most island tours from Faro use catamarans, which ride steadily and have covered seating; one Formosamar guest said the seats were like sitting on a sofa. Islands 4 you uses catamarans or pontoon boats and can swap in a speedboat when numbers, wind or maintenance call for it, and its roof may be closed in bad weather. Odyssey Traditional Boat Tours’ listings describe its boats only as boats with shade, and the full day runs in groups of 11 or 17.
The quietest ride is Lands’ solar boat: an hour through the marshes from its kiosk on the Porta Nova pier, with a guide and no engine noise, from about $28 when we checked, the cheapest guided trip here. One guest found it a little slow and thought it would suit older people and young children. Another, on a wet January day, still saw ospreys, cormorants and sandpipers.
It doesn’t land anywhere.
Every trip on this site stays inside the lagoon, where the barrier islands hold back the Atlantic swell, so the water you cross is sheltered. The inlets between the islands and the ocean beaches on their far side are another matter.
There are two high and two low tides a day here, with a range of about 2 metres and up to about 3.5 on spring tides. At low water, sandbanks and shellfish beds rise out of the channels and skippers choose their route to match, so the same trip looks different at ten in the morning and four in the afternoon. Odyssey and Formosamar both say the tide can change the route or the order of stops.
The flats you cross are farms. Stakes and nets mark clam and oyster beds; by a 2015 estimate about 90% of Portugal’s farmed clams came from the Ria Formosa, and most of the oysters are exported, mainly to France. At low tide you may see people digging clams by hand.
Birds come with every trip without being the point of most of them: herons and egrets along the marsh edges, white storks, cormorants, ospreys in winter, spoonbills on a lucky day and flamingos as an occasional bonus, mainly from autumn to early spring. Deserta and Culatra also hold the world’s largest breeding colony of Audouin’s gull, more than 7,000 nests in 2024, though none of these trips is sold as a visit to it. Near Faro you may also watch planes coming in to land at the airport, which sits beside the western lagoon.
Two things you won’t see. Dolphins live outside the lagoon, and the dolphin trips from Faro and Olhão head out to sea; none of the nine trips here leaves the lagoon. The seahorses, once among the densest populations in the world, have crashed in number and are now protected in sanctuaries off Faro. Benagil’s sea caves, the Algarve’s other famous boat trip, are a different outing altogether, on the cliff coast about 60 km west.
The island stops double as swim stops in spring and summer. Islands 4 you lists swimming on both of its islands in those seasons, and Estrela da Ria Formosa hands out snorkel masks. Lifeguards work only in the bathing season and only at set beaches: the regional beach guide lists them at Praia do Farol and Armona-Mar, and Animaris guards the Deserta beach in front of the Estaminé restaurant. Currents by the inlets are usually very strong, so swim where there is a lifeguard and keep away from the channel mouths.
Lunch is never included. Culatra village has several restaurants and cafés and a bakery, and Odyssey advises booking a table there in summer. Farol has places that open in summer. On Deserta, Estaminé says it serves lunch all year, though one guest found it closed in mid-October, so book ahead; on the guarded beach an umbrella and two loungers cost €25 in season. On Odyssey’s tours you can bring a picnic instead.
Pack a hat, sunscreen, water, swimwear and a towel in summer, and a waterproof layer in autumn and winter, as Formosamar suggests. The islands are dunes and sand with little shade. None of the nine trips lists hotel pickup. Islands 4 you and Estrela da Ria Formosa say their tours don’t suit people with mobility impairments, and the islands themselves mean sand and long boardwalks.
The boats run all year. Summer brings more departures and longer stops, and lifeguards on the main beaches; winter brings emptier islands, wading birds, shorter café hours and a need for a jacket. Every operator here can change or cancel a trip for weather, and all nine trips can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead.
For a first visit, yes, if you go for what the lagoon is: car-free sand islands, a fishing village where lunch comes off the boats, a long empty beach and the southernmost tip of mainland Portugal, all within an hour of Faro’s old town. It is quiet nature rather than big wildlife, and a stop is a stop, not a whole afternoon on the beach. Is a Ria Formosa boat tour worth it? weighs it for different kinds of visitor.
If you only have an hour, the sunset trip or the solar boat gives you the water without the islands. If you want a long day on Deserta for very little, the return ferry ticket does it, but choose your boat back with care: one guest wished they had picked an earlier one, because the island has a single restaurant and little else. For a first look from Faro, book Islands 4 you’s morning tour, the most-reviewed trip on this site, with a small boat and two very different islands before you are back in town.

"The company was very communicative, sent very detailed messages through Get your Guide and whatsapp, the ride was pretty quick, and the guide was really friendly. The boardwalk circuit is longer than you think it is, and I had to walk really quickly to do the full loop to get back to the boat in time. There were good stretches of beach if you wanted to take a dip or just walk through the sand. highly recommend."

What people ask before booking a boat on the Ria Formosa, answered in the first sentence. Prices are the booking platform's, checked in October 2026.
Yes, for car-free sand islands, a working fishing village and the southernmost point of mainland Portugal, all a short boat ride from Faro or Olhão. The Ria Formosa is a natural park of about 18,000 hectares and a Ramsar wetland since 1980, and in 2010 it was elected one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal. Expect quiet nature rather than big wildlife: flamingos turn up on some days, and dolphins live out at sea. The Farol lighthouse is closed to visits while it is renovated (as of October 2026), and afternoon tours get shorter island stops, so go in the morning if you can. Is a Ria Formosa boat tour worth it?
By public ferry, on a guided boat, by water taxi, or on foot at a few points along the shore. Public ferries run all year from Olhão to Armona, Culatra and Farol, and Animaris sails from Faro to Ilha Deserta every day. Guided boats range from one-hour cruises with no landing to island tours of three to five hours, and there is a 24-hour hop-on hop-off pass between Faro, Deserta, Farol and Culatra. Water taxis from Olhão charge by the boat. On foot, Praia de Faro has a road bridge, Barril beach near Tavira can be walked to, and the mainland trails at Ludo and Quinta de Marim lead into the marshes. Ferry or boat tour?
Nobody can rank the whole Algarve, so we won't; on the Ria Formosa, choose by what you want from the day. For beaches and villages, take an island tour: Islands 4 you's Faro tour has the most reviews on this site, 2,980 at 4.7, and Odyssey Traditional Boat Tours' full day from Olhão the highest rating, 4.8 from 2,072. For quiet nature there is the one-hour solar boat, for the evening light the sunset trip, and for freedom the ferry or the hop-on hop-off pass. Benagil's sea caves are a different trip, on the cliff coast about 60 km west. Compare the island tours

From the Porta Nova pier by the old-town gate: Estrela da Ria Formosa's 4-stop catamaran (look for staff in green at its stand), Animaris's Deserta ferry and hop-on hop-off pass, and the Lands solar boat. From the marina: Formosamar's catamaran and sunset trip, from its store in the Ginásio Clube Naval building (check in 10 minutes before the catamaran), and Islands 4 you's islands tour, which meets about 100 m in front of the Eva Senses Hotel, with staff in red. Check which one your booking names. Boat tours from Faro or Olhão
Yes: Odyssey Traditional Boat Tours runs a full day and a three-hour trip from Olhão. Its stand is at Cais T on Avenida 5 de Outubro, near the public-ferry ticket office, and the listings offer two starting points, so check yours; for the three-hour trip Odyssey asks you to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early. The full day stops at Farol for an hour, Culatra for two (45 minutes to an hour on afternoon runs) and Armona, or in summer a quiet beach reached only by boat. The three-hour trip lands on Culatra and Armona. Both can be shared or private. See the full day from Olhão
None of the trips on this site starts in Tavira: they all leave from Faro or Olhão, and Olhão is the nearer of the two. Tavira has its own island, Ilha de Tavira, at the eastern end of the lagoon. Ferries cross to it from the Quatro Águas pier all year, more often in summer, and from the town centre in season; a boat runs from Santa Luzia to Terra Estreita beach from June to October; and Barril beach can be reached on foot or by a little train. Faro or Olhão?
Yes: Formosamar runs a one-hour sunset trip from Faro marina, from about $36 when we checked, rated 4.7 from 456 reviews. It is a guided trip on a pontoon boat with no landing, from the Boat Tours store in the Ginásio Clube Naval building. The departure moves with the sun, which sets at Faro around 20:55 in late June and around 17:18 in late December, so check the time for your date, and take something warm in spring. The trip excludes hotel pickup and tips. Odyssey's 15:45 full-day departure from Olhão also runs until sunset, which only works out around September. Ria Formosa sunset boat trips
Yes: both of Odyssey's tours from Olhão can be booked as a private boat as well as a shared group. That covers the full day, with Farol, Culatra and Armona or a summer beach, and the three-hour trip to Culatra and Armona. The other private option is a water taxi from Olhão, at roughly €30 to €55 a boat for up to five people when we checked in 2026, depending on the island; that is a ride across rather than a tour. See the three-hour trip from Olhão
Yes: Lands runs a one-hour trip on a quiet, solar-powered boat from the Porta Nova pier in Faro, from about $28 when we checked, rated 4.6 from 266 reviews. It is the only electric boat on this site and it doesn't land; it moves slowly through the marshes with a guide, and guests have reported spoonbills, ospreys, cormorants, sandpipers and crabs. The listing says it leaves from the marina, but the Lands kiosk is on the Porta Nova pier, a few minutes' walk away. Odyssey's three-hour trip from Olhão adds a bird, species and mollusc identification guide. See the solar boat
Deserta for an empty beach and the walk to the cape, Culatra for village life and lunch, Farol for the lighthouse village, Armona for the easy ferry from Olhão. Ilha Deserta (Ilha da Barreta) is uninhabited, with one restaurant and a boardwalk loop of about 2 km to Cabo de Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. Its restaurant, Estaminé, says it opens all year but was found closed in mid-October 2025, so book ahead or bring a picnic. Culatra village is a working fishing community with seafood restaurants and no cars. Farol is named after its lighthouse, which is closed to visits while it is renovated. Armona is 15 to 20 minutes from Olhão on the public ferry. The Ria Formosa islands guide
Take the ferry for a beach day on one island, and a tour for a guide and two or three island stops in one go. From Olhão the public ferry runs all year: €2.10 one way to Armona or Culatra and €2.40 to Farol in 2026, paid at the terminal kiosk, so take cash. From Faro the public boat to Farol and Culatra runs mainly in summer. Animaris's Deserta ferry runs every day; on this site its return ticket is from about $11 when we checked, 45 minutes each way with no guide listed, and you name your boat back when you leave Faro; the operator can change it if there is space. Ferry or boat tour?
Yes, at the island stops in spring and summer, but only some beaches have lifeguards. Islands 4 you lists swimming on both of its islands in those seasons, and Estrela da Ria Formosa brings snorkel masks. Lifeguards work only in the bathing season: the regional beach guide lists them at Praia do Farol and Armona-Mar, and the Deserta beach in front of the Estaminé restaurant is guarded too. Currents by the inlets are usually very strong, so swim where there is a lifeguard. On a 45-minute stop you'll have time for a swim or a brisk walk, not both. Formosamar asks for swimwear and a towel in spring and summer and waterproofs in autumn and winter, and its times and route can change with the weather and tides. The Ilha Deserta boat trip
Between 20 minutes and two hours a stop, depending on the trip and the time of day. Islands 4 you lists 45 minutes each on Deserta and Farol; Formosamar an hour on Farol and 20 to 30 minutes on Deserta; Estrela da Ria Formosa 45 minutes on Deserta and Farol, 15 at Hangares and two hours on Culatra; Odyssey's full day an hour on Farol, two on Culatra and an hour on its third stop. Those are morning lengths. One September afternoon guest on Estrela's tour got about 40 minutes on Culatra, and Odyssey cuts its afternoon Culatra stop to 45 minutes or an hour. Children are welcome on most trips, but the islands are hard going with limited mobility. No listing states a minimum age; Estrela da Ria Formosa requires children to be with an adult, and every guided tour here lists life jackets. One family on Odyssey's three-hour trip brought sons of 13 and 8. Islands 4 you and Estrela say their tours don't suit people with mobility impairments, Islands 4 you and Lands exclude wheelchair users, and Odyssey asks guests with reduced mobility to tell it in advance. Pets are not allowed on most of the trips. See what each tour allows
